POSITION DUTIES

The graphic designer will report to and work closely with the Marketing and the Special Projects Manager and the Office of Communications and Community Engagement team to develop compelling and effective graphics and imagery concepts to support a variety of communications products including: digital (social media/MSDE website), print (annual reports, brochures), presentations and video. As a member of the Communications team, the graphic designer will work on various communication projects that promote MSDE initiatives both internally and externally, supporting multi-media and marketing/ education campaigns and initiatives throughout the agency. The graphic designer will help ensure quality agency branding and messaging, ensuring that all materials are consistent with MSDE’s multi-year strategic plan and Blueprint for Maryland’s Future initiatives.

Design:
● Utilize design software such as Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) to create manuals, booklets, and visual graphics. 
● Create content/graphics for social media and web platforms. 
● Utilize Microsoft Office Suite of tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) to create PowerPoint presentations and visually appealing excel sheets. 
● Ability to translate complex data into impactful charts, graphs, etc.

Project management: 
● Consults with Communications and Community Engagement team and additional MSDE divisions and manages timelines and deadlines 
● Supports divisions/offices with designed PowerPoints for presentations; manages monthly board presentation edits 
● Assists with tracking projects and manages project timelines to meet deadlines
● Assist with developing graphics and designs for PR/Outreach campaigns. 
● Utilizes proficient knowledge and skill in content layout programs to design brochures, reports and additional printed material for internal and external publications. 
Designs and edits monthly MSDE newsletters.

Special Projects/ Other duties assigned: 
● Supports and assists any Communication projects for MSDE initiatives, including displays, overall branding, etc. 
● Provides support for photography and visual aids as needed
● Creates design elements for displays, conferences, etc. 
● Oversees graphics related small procurement/ printing/ works with consultants as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Proficient with Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) to create effective graphics for web and printed. communications pieces (for example: annual reports, manuals, brochures, and trade show displays.
2. Proficient with  Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
3. Proficient with Press-press and knowledge of print production.
4. Experience with Sharepoint and Wordpress is highly desired.
5. Marketing and public relations experience a plus.

*Candidates will be required to provide an online portfolio that reflects a strong understanding of web/print design concepts as outlined above in the interview process.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
