This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forestry Services. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service, is currently accepting applications for 2 natural resource specialists with forestry expertise to work with landowners and conservation agencies to expand and renew tree and riparian forest planting and other practices and support sustainable forest and buffer management. One position particularly supports the Forest Health Program, working on invasive species issues in partnership with MD Dept. of Agriculture, and developing forest management approaches to address common forest health concerns.

Work includes outreach and communication planning to reach landowners and organizations, collecting forest inventory data, mapping and analyzing trends of forest cover and forest health issues, developing recommendations for management of forest stands, developing planting plans for buffers and other tree planting, invasive species control and recommendations, wildlife habitat improvement projects, assisting with prescribed burning or fuel management, site visits and sampling for forest health issues, and working with other local, state, and federal agencies to carry out watershed forestry projects. Other activities may include assisting with Backyard Buffers program, Healthy Forests/Healthy Waters planting projects, and tree planting maintenance activities.

Note: Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in an environmental science or natural resources planning, management or development.

Experience: None

Notes: 1. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in urban or regional planning, engineering, physical geography, or the physical, chemical, biological sciences and one year of experience in natural resources planning or applied environmental science may be substituted for the required education.

2. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in natural resources planning, management, administration, development, environmental, urban or regional planning; resources economics or development; environmental system management; water or land resources planning and management; environmental landscape architecture; or the physical, biological, chemical or environmental sciences maybe substituted for up to three years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the  general natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or general natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the general natural resources management and biological sciences field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s). 
  • Experience and/or skills with forestry, including developing forest management plans, creating tree or buffer planting plans, and tree planting and maintenance experience. 
  • Experience and/or skills using geographic information systems (GIS), particularly for map making, and GPS for field data plot location and data collection. 
  • Experience and/or skills identifying and controlling invasive species
