Madonna Ranger Station, Jarrettsville, MD (Harford County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Forest Service is accepting applications for a seasonal Forest Ranger position that will report to the Fire Staff and assist with wildland fire management in a multi-county area. Responsibilities will include wildland fire prevention, pre-suppression and suppression duties including response to wildfires, prescribed burning, equipment operation, prevention and planning activities, training, routine maintenance, and other duties as assigned. Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Three years’ experience in wildland fire or forestry work.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience in prescribed fire.
2. Experience in equipment and facility maintenance.
3. Experience in wildland fire.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees appointed to this position will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position.   

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Completion of Basic Wildland Fire Training: S-130, S-190, I-100 is required.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
