LOCATION OF POSITION

Patapsco Valley State Park (Baltimore, Howard & Carroll Counties), and Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area (Baltimore County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Patapsco Valley State Park in Catonsville, Ellicott City and Marriottsville, Maryland; and Soldiers Delight in Owings Mills, Maryland.

PARK RANGER - Patapsco ($15 - $17 / hour) 24 vacancies
A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Drivers License Required. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Provide visitors with park information and regulations
● Register campers
● Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bath houses and restrooms
● General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles
● Monitor recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking and biking

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER - Patapsco ($15 - $17 / hour) 20 vacancies
The Seasonal Park Maintenance position is responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or recreation area. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Drivers License Required. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Clean restrooms, shelters and campsites
● Refill bathroom supplies
● Removal of litter
● Maintenance of facilities and grounds
● Mow and trim grass
● Painting and carpentry work
● Upkeep of equipment
● Use of hand tools and operation of power equipment

PARK OUTREACH EDUCATORS ($15 - $17 / hour) 8 vacancies
The Seasonal Outreach Educator develops and leads interpretive programming at a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Drivers License Required. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Develop and present interpretive, historical and environmental education programs
● Assist with volunteers and youth programs
● Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials
● Advise the public of general park rules and regulations
● Operation and maintenance of nature centers, history centers, buildings and grounds
● Assist with organizing and maintaining historic buildings
● Work with diverse user groups

SCALES & TALES NATURALISTS - Soldiers Delight ($15 - $17 / hour) 3 vacancies
The Scales& Tales Naturalists is responsible for the daily care of captive raptors, snakes, frogs and turtles belonging to the Scales & Tales Program. This includes feeding, cleaning habitats, providing basic medical care, daily and monthly health checks, and training. Applicants should be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
● Cleaning habitats including the removal of leftover food items, feces and bugs
● Providing basic medical care and daily and monthly health checks, as well as scheduling veterinary care as needed to ensure quality of life
● Provide educational programs- formally and informally about the animals to visitors and large presentation groups
● Assist with the operation of exhibits and nature centers

RANGER STATION ATTENDANT - Patapsco ($15 - $17 / hour) 14 vacancies
The Contact Station Attendant / Camper Contact Attendant is responsible for welcoming visitors to the park, collecting various service charges and/or registering campers. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Answer phones / provide information to visitors
● Register campers
● Operate a computer reservation system
● Handle money and provide change
● Assist with facility upkeep and maintenance

VISITOR SERVICES ATTENDANT - Patapsco ($15 - $17 / hour) 6 vacancies
The Visitor Services position provides secretarial and financial duties for a State Park. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Answer phones and greet customers
● Process mail
● Prepare cash deposits and supporting paperwork
● Photocopy and type documents
● Enter data using Excel spreadsheets
● Process seasonal contracts and seasonal timesheets
● Process bills for payment

TRAIL TECHNICIAN - Patapsco ($15 - $17 / hour) 10 vacancies
The Trail Technician is responsible for the maintenance and construction associated with a large trail network within a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Perform trail maintenance and construction based on guidelines set forth by the USDA Forest Service and the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA)
● Hike trails of varying difficulty
● Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR - Patapsco ($15 - 17 / hour) 1 vacancy
The Volunteer Coordinator will match volunteers with opportunities within the park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties generally include, but are not limited to:
● Maintain volunteer database
● Coordinate volunteer training
● Provide general customer service and park information to visitors
● Schedule, plan and lead volunteer projects and park events
● Communicate with current and new volunteers via phone and e-mail
● Develop volunteer program advertisements and assist with public relation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
