LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

PARK RANGER (4 vacancies) ($15.90 / hour)
BI-LINGUAL PARK RANGER (SPANISH) ($16 / hour)
A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Provide visitors with park information and regulations
• Register campers
• Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bath houses and restrooms
• General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles
• Monitor recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking and biking
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER (15 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER – RESTROOM MONITOR, PART-TIME, APPROX 16-24 HOURS / WEEK (4 vacancies) ($15.10 / hour)
The Seasonal Park Maintenance position is responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or recreation area. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Clean restrooms, shelters and campsites
• Refill bathroom supplies
• Removal of litter
• Maintenance of facilities and grounds
• Mow and trim grass
• Painting, electric, carpentry and plumbing work
• Upkeep of vehicles, equipment and vessels
• Use of hand tools and operation of power equipment
• Monitor restroom buildings for cleanliness, wipe surfaces, remove litter, restock supplies
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PARK NATURALIST (2 vacancies) ($15.90 / hour)
The Seasonal Park Naturalist develops and leads interpretive programming at a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Develop and present interpretive and environmental education programs
• Assist with volunteers and youth programs
• Develop and maintains exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials
• Advise the public of general park rules and regulations
• Operation and maintenance of nature centers, buildings and grounds
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

CONTACT STATION ATTENDANT / CAMPER CONTACT ATTENDANT (8 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
The Contact Station Attendant / Camper Contact Attendant is responsible for welcoming visitors to the park, collecting various service charges and/or registering campers. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Answer phones / provide information to visitors
• Register campers
• Operate a computer reservation system
• Handle money and provide change
• Assist with facility upkeep and maintenance

LIFEGUARD – LAKE OR BAYFRONT BEACH (20 vacancies) ($16.10 / hour)
The Lake / Bayfront Beach Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring visitors have a safe and enjoyable recreational experience. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Provide safe water-based recreation for park patrons
• Provide visitors with information and park regulations
• Maintain the beach area, to include trash and litter removal
• Provide emergency care
• Prepare written reports
• Must be certified by a national agency in Lifeguard Training, Fair Aid and CPR, as well as pass a physical evaluation, swim test and written test. Candidates may be certified after hire.

MARINA ATTENDANT (6 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
The Marina Attendant provides customer service to park patrons at a park marina facility. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Rent boats to park patrons
• Provide visitors with park information and regulations
• Operate cash register
• Maintain and clean boats and marina equipment
• Open and close Boat Center
• Retail sales in East Beach concessions store

BILINGUAL INTERPRETER, PART-TIME, APPROX 20 HOURS/WEEK (1 vacancy) ($15 / hour) 
The Bilingual Interpreter will communicate with and assist Spanish-speaking park visitors. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Develop and lead nature programs and hikes
• Provide general customer service and park information to visitors
• Communicate with visitors while assisting with park operations (e.g. beach patrol, search and rescue, traffic control)
• Develop program advertisements and assist with public relations

GARDEN HORTICULTURIST – Tawes Garden in Annapolis
(1 vacancy) ($15 to 15.80 / hour)
A Garden Horticulturist is a 10-month position running the daily horticultural aspects of a public garden/arboretum. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be able to perform manual labor. Duties may vary and generally include, but not limited to:
• Supervise the seasonal gardener staff
• Garden Design and plant selection
• Perform pruning, edging, fertilizing, mulching, planting and irrigation.
• Monitoring IPM (Integrated Pest Management) throughout the garden
• Running of a gift shop – Inventory purchasing, merchandising and staffing
• Event setup and programming
• Assisting visitors with gardening questions

VISITOR SERVICES ATTENDANT (1 vacancy) ($15 / hour)
The Visitor Services position provides secretarial and financial duties for a State Park. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Answer phones and greet customers
• Process mail
• Photocopy and type documents
• Enter data using Excel spreadsheets
• Process seasonal contracts
• Process bills for payment
• Perform sales of park passes via cash register/credit card terminal
• Coordinate and track reservations of park shelters

BUILDING SERVICES WORKER (4 vacancies) ($15.50 / hour)
The Building Services Worker position is responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of park restrooms and visitor facilities and grounds. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions, primarily on weekends and holidays. Applicants must be able to work weekends and holidays, as scheduled. Duties generally include, but are not limited to:
• Monitor restrooms facilities and spot clean, as needed
• Refill bathroom supplies
• Monitor buildings, facilities, and exhibits
• Removing litter and trash

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
