Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the job is to apply and approve professional fire protection engineering principles and practices to ensure compliance with the fire laws included in the Maryland Public Safety Article and requirements of the State Fire Prevention Code as applicable to design, construction, and use of new and existing buildings and processes from a life safety and property protection standpoint; serves as a technical code enforcement resource at the regional level to staff of the agency; implement and coordinate code requirements with the local fire and building officials and numerous state agencies; provide appropriate professional level of fire protection engineering services as directed by the Chief Fire Protection Engineer; provide code interpretation and fire protection engineering assistance to architects, engineers and other design professionals consistent with agency policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Two years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work.

OR Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Four years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Engineering classifications or Engineering specialty codes in the fire protection engineering field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties, which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Employees are subject to call 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Persons appointed to this position will be assigned duties in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties; however, the position may involve travel throughout the State.
