Main Purpose of Job

The Social Work Supervisor is a supervisory level position requiring a licensed, professional clinical social worker to lead the Social Work Department at Maryland’s Potomac Center.  The main purpose of this job is to lead the Social Work team, supervise lower level Social Workers, and ensure all Social Work care is accurate, complete and timely.  The Social Worker Supervisor personally provides and directs the provision of services to and on behalf of individuals with intellectual disabilities entrusted into Potomac Center’s care.  They will serve on the Center’s leadership team contributing towards quality of care and goal attainment.  The Social Work Supervisor assigns and reviews the work of others, trains employees, recommends the selection, promotion and termination of employees, approves leave and signs time cards, signs annual performance evaluations, determines and resolved procedural problems within the unit, serves as spokesperson for subordinates, explains policies and directives from management and issues formal disciplinary reminders, warnings and reprimands. 

The Social Work Supervisor will interpret policies and procedures, review progress reports, and coordinate all phases of the Social Work Department.  They will review case material to assure compliance to standards and procedures for providing social work services and evaluate existing social service programs, initiating or modifying programs as necessary.  The Social Work Supervisor will represent the Potomac Center in cooperative relationships with other agencies and institutions, assist in planning and conducting in-service training activities for social workers and other health services personnel, and make recommendations with regards to department, personnel or budgetary needs.  They will administratively oversee and coordinate psychosocial and legal proceedings required by the admissions and hearings processes.  They will provide guidance and social work consultation to other members of the Interdisciplinary health care team.  They may coordinate a social service program with residential administrators in residential facilities to assure the delivery of service.  They will attend and participate in committees to set standards for social work service and other service delivery, and may participate and represent the agency on committees and in professional social work organizations. The Social Worker Supervisor is obligated to discharge professional responsibilities with minimal supervision in accordance with license, professional and ethical standards, expertise and regulatory and ancillary requirements. 

The Social Work Supervisor will also participate in direct residential care.  As such they will evaluate individual resident’s needs and outcome based performance measures by attending Team meetings, reviewing charts/records, exchanging information with other disciplines, and observing Individual interactions on the Cottages.  They will analyze Individual's record to complete annual review of social history, including background, family, programming, sources of funding, guardianship, burial plan, and social service recommendations.  They will maintain a social work record, including social work evaluations, record of correspondence and family contacts, financial papers, and other pertinent information.  The Social Work Department is the primary familial contact for all Potomac Center residents and as such the Social Work Supervisor oversees and ensures quality family involvement for all residents.  They will informs families about services available at Potomac Center and current developments in working with Individuals with intellectual disabilities.  They will inform families of trips and special activities and will work with families about special situations such as obtaining life insurance or exploring guardianship. 

The Social Work Supervisor is physically located on the Potomac Center campus to facilitate acquiring an intimate feel for and appreciation of Individual needs and behaviors, and to better assess the degree or depth of familial involvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

Experience:  Four years of experience rendering clinical social work services in a health care or treatment setting subsequent to the receipt of an approved Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or Social Work specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess experience participating in direct residential care as well as experience working with family members of identified patients/residents, and forensic experience (i.e., court-involvement). The desired candidate should also possess previous supervisory experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker-Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have the license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Maryland Department of Health Testing Unit.

2. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
