Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a part time Public Services Assistant for the Jefferson Patterson and Museum (JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources.  www.jefpat.org

POSITION DUTIES

This Public Services Assistant provides essential coverage in the Visitor Center and Museum gift shop and assists with cultural heritage events and event rentals. Responsibilities will include greeting and assisting visitors, providing tours of our museum spaces, responding to telephone, email, and in-person inquiries, cashier duties in the gift shop, and assisting with wedding and event rentals.

Provides tours of museum spaces

Assists with tours of Pavilion and other lease venues 

Provides support during event rentals

Communicates effectively with the general public: greeting visitors, providing general park information, responding to phone and email inquiries, and assisting on-site visitors

Operates office equipment, uses computer software, and performs basic office procedures to assist with gift shop maintenance, including: maintaining the register in the gift shop, assisting with digital inventory management, and merchandising

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Six months experience performing clerical duties in an office environment.

Notes

1. Additional experience performing clerical duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Six months clerical training with three courses in subjects such as keyboarding, clerical math, word processing, spreadsheets, database, graphics presentation, proofreading, or office etiquette may be substituted for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical or Office Services specialty codes in the Clerical Support field of work on a year-for year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Experience working in customer service or retail and/or working in a museum setting.
2. Experience with event planning or event coordination.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The assessment may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.  Please report all experience and education that is related to this position.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service needs to be provided before hire.
