This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey located in Baltimore City’s Old Goucher District, is currently accepting applications for a Geologist Lead/Advanced. Duties of this position include serving as project lead of NGGDPP Data Preservation grants; proposal writing, grant management and coordinating the activities necessary to inventory, organize, manage, and preserve MGS’s geological collections; mapping historical shorelines and determining erosion rates, planning and conducting geological investigations of Maryland’s tidewater, freshwater and bedrock resources and, creating GIS layers for various projects related to shore erosion, geologic maps, and geologic data compilation. GIS duties will include creating and managing geodatabases, georeferencing, digitizing, creating shapefiles, running topology, and generating metadata. These duties require an advanced working knowledge of:  GPS systems operations/datums,; GIS software including ESRI ArcGIS, USGS DSAS, SURFER; relational database management software including Microsoft Access; USGS National Geologic Map Database GeMS schema. The successful candidate will also have proven skills in report writing and digital cartography, which are required for the publication of final products.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Five years of experience performing professional geological work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experienced in working with geologic collections.
2. Experience in GIS software.
3. Experience in coastal geology and marine remote sensing data collection and processing.
4. Experience in report and grant proposal writing with peer-reviewed and published writings.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protective equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
