Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to support the people of Maryland in making communities safer by ensuring appropriate levels of control of offenders through comprehensive case management and intervention strategies, ensuring the accuracy and timely investigative products to decision makers, ensuring the delivery of victim services, and entering and developing partnerships with stakeholders that lead to a shared vision and living the professional principles of the division. This first-line supervisory position effectively and efficiently supervises a field operations unit in accordance with the divisional mission, goals and established policies and procedures. Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of Parole and Probation Agents and related support staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university, with 30 semester credit hours in the social, behavioral, or correctional sciences.

Experience: Four years of experience supervising persons on parole or probation, or investigating parole and/or probation matters, or administrative experience in parole and probation programs, or training parole and probation agents.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute one year of specialized experience counseling, investigating, or supervising persons on parole and probation for the specialized 30 credit hours in the social, behavioral, or correctional sciences.

2. Candidates may substitute graduate level education in the social, behavioral, or correctional sciences on a year-for-year basis for up to one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military services experience as a commissioned officer in social work or correctional counseling classifications or specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at the rate of two years of military experience for one year of the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

This would be DPP internal only, open to Supervisors with one year experience and candidates who are currently on the Field Supervisor I eligibility list.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must currently be on the Field Supervisor I list and must have been rated “Meets Standards” or above on their most recent End-of-Cycle and Mid-Cycle performance ratings.  Particular consideration will be given to candidates who:

    •   Have a strong knowledge of policy and procedures of DPP;
    •   Have outstanding organizational, communication, and verbal skills;
    • Demonstrate excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects 
        and tasks; and
    • Is proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel and Word), system 
        applications (OCMS, CJIS, JIS and DPSCS Reporting System) and the Internet (Google, 
        Maryland Judiciary Case Search).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Candidates must meet all selection standards as set forth in the Code of Maryland Regulations by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Candidates who receive a probationary appointment must satisfactorily complete a prescribed training program prior to permanent appointment. Selection standards of the Correctional Training Commission may be obtained from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Suite 309, 6776 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore Maryland 21215.
