Introduction

This is a Management Service position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority. This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Annapolis, MD (Anne Arundel County)

POSITION DUTIES

This position manages the Maryland Biological Stream Survey Program, including oversight of the collection, compilation, and dissemination of statewide Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) data, technical development and implementation of state-of-the-art ecological assessments and monitoring programs, habitat degradation, land use, and non-point-source pollution on aquatic living resources in Maryland. This position requires management of a high-profile departmental program, including program development, management, coordination, and program review. The job also requires direct technical interaction with scientific experts in a number of fields. It also requires management and oversight of professional, technical workers and the preparation of complex, interdisciplinary scientific documents that are occasionally subject to academic peer review.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.                    

Experience: Five years of experience in managing biological monitoring and resources assessments, in freshwater streams.              

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of stream species listed as rare, threatened and endangered in Maryland  

Knowledge of Maryland stream animals considered invasive  

Proficiency in taxonomic identification of at least one group of stream animals  

Experience in technical writing  

Experience with quality control of stream ecological and/or water quality data  

Familiar with the Maryland Biological Stream Survey

Experience with managing data collection, management, analysis, report writing, and budgets for complex stream assessment projects

Experience in training professionals in stream ecological assessment

This recruitment is limited to current employees of the Maryland Department Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service.
