Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves to provide diagnostic and therapeutic physical therapy to students enrolled at the Maryland School for the Deaf, ages 3 to 21. Services provided by this position include assessing to determine present level of functioning, establishing goals specifically designed to address the individual student’s needs and the use of developmentally appropriate activities and strategies to facilitate a student’s independent function and participation in the educational program. The physical therapist serves as an IEP team member and supports classroom staff, residential staff, and families through consult and training services. MSD strives to ensure students achieve personal excellence in a nurturing and engaging environment.

POSITION DUTIES

Complete skilled observations and assessments as determined by the IEP team.

Prepare formal reports and share findings with the IEP team.

Collect and analyze data in order to describe current level of functioning and establish appropriate goals & objectives, if needed.

Develop and implement student therapeutic intervention programs to enhance access, participation, and/or facilitate progress in their educational environment.

Track student progress to determine efficacy of services and revise as necessary.

Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports on student services and progress (i.e. file maintenance, online service logs, medical assistance billing paperwork, quarterly tracking progress reports, IEP development and updates, assessment/observation reports).

Provide consultation and training regarding strategies, techniques, suggested accommodations/modifications related to the educational environment, mobility equipment, and seating/positioning.

Participate in IEP development and serve as an IEP team member.

Collaborate with specialists and classroom staff in order to promote student achievement.

Serve as a member of the Related Services Team.

Support the Bilingual Education concepts throughout the school.

Maintain Physical Therapy treatment area and student working files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

3 years experience working as a licensed Physical Therapist. Must have ability to work as an independent pediatric PT.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and training in a variety of pediatric orthopedic impairments;

Experience working in an educational placement;

Awareness and knowledge about bilingual deaf education and deaf culture;

Should have basic sign language skills upon entry with the goal of increasing ASL fluency over time.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Physical Therapist from the Maryland State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568.)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.
