Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to protect the public health through planning, directing, and supervising the activities of a medium-sized (population 180,000) County Local Environmental Health Department Bureau. This includes securing compliance with local and state health and environmental regulations and laws, and coordinating environmental health programs with Carroll County and municipal governments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a  bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and six years of experience involving inspections and investigations in the field of environmental health or closely related environmental health experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity. 

A master’s degree in Public Health or Environmental Health Science can substitute for one year non-supervisory experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates should possess:

  • Experience in managing program budgets and grants;
  • Experience in working with other governmental agencies and non-profit organizations;
  • Experience interacting with elected and appointed government officials;
  • Experience overseeing multiple environmental health related programs;
  • Experience and training in Emergency Preparedness and Operations related to public health emergencies; and,
  • Experience in overseeing the enforcement of regulations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license or be eligible to obtain licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
