Main Purpose of Job

The Environmental Health Division Director is part of the executive team for the St. Mary's County Health Department (SMCHD).  This position will be responsible for the planning and administration of all environmental health programs, services, functions and field work for SMCHD.  Job duties will include:  Responsibility for compliance with delegated authorities, laws/regulations governing work, and agency objectives; Providing strategic direction and supervision to a team of environmental health specialists and support staff.; and, working with residents, community partners, and other agency units to ensure continuous performance improvement.  This position will also continuously review methods, practices, policies and procedures to provide input on agency Quality Improvement (QI) process to assist with improving the effectiveness of the program. 

The incumbent for this position will be designated emergency essential and subject to call back to provide disaster relief services during a disaster/emergency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and six years of experience involving inspections and investigations in the field of environmental health or closely related environmental health experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity.  A master’s degree in Public Health or Environmental Health Science can substitute for one year non-supervisory experience.  

Applicants must be licensed as a Licensed Environmental Health Specialist through the Maryland State Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates will possess the following:

  • Experience supervising subordinate environmental health staff responsible for regulatory inspections, soil and water surveys and sampling, etc.
  • Experience communicating technical and regulatory information in a professional, clear and concise manner to community partners, elected officials, media and others.
  • Skill in program management which includes organizing multiple projects, developing program scope and resource allocations, and budget and fiscal management.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants must be licensed as a Licensed Environmental Health Specialist through the Maryland State Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany the application.
