ARCHAEOLOGIST III (Contractual)

Introduction

This is a full-time Contractual position with the Maryland Historical Trust /Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), located within the Maryland Department of Planning.  JPPM, the State Museum of Archaeology and a center for both regional and statewide archaeological research, is located on 560 acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland and is home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab) which houses over 9 million artifacts.

JPPM is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic candidate to fill the position of Patterson Center Archaeologist at the MAC Lab.

POSITION DUTIES

The Archaeologist will conduct excavations in advance of construction activities during the Patterson Center Project at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, monitor those activities to make sure no unexpected historical resources are destroyed by them, process the artifacts recovered, and write a report on the findings.

  • Conduct archaeological excavations in areas of proposed ground disturbance around the Patterson Center, in consultation with JPPM staff archaeologists;
  • Monitor construction activities as they take place to look for unexpected historical remains, and mitigate damage to those remains in an expeditious manner;
  • Wash, label, and catalog the artifacts recovered during the project, enter the catalog into a database, and prepare the artifacts for conservation treatments, if necessary;
  • Write a report on the findings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a related field.

Experience:  Minimum of three years of archaeological field experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a related field. 
2. Experience doing archaeology in the Mid-Atlantic region. 
3. Experience of 19th-century artifacts and the ability to identify them. 
4. Demonstrated experience in writing professional-quality reports, papers, or articles. 
5. Experience with MS Office Software including Access.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

1. Must be able to work in an outdoor environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions.
2. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
