POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position, which reports to the Director of Infection Prevention and Control, is to assist and support operations of the infection prevention and control departments; and consultation with County and state health departments as required or as appropriate. This position helps coordinate infection prevention and control throughout the hospital; assists with development of infection control policies and procedures for the department and hospital in compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, CMS; and county, state and federal regulatory entities; performs daily infection surveillance; identifies, reports and investigates possible outbreaks and helps organize resources in response to a confirmed outbreak. Responsibilities include interactions with physicians, nurses, department managers, supervisors, and professional and non-professional staff to provide infection prevention and control information; resolve infection control issues; and identify opportunities to prevent and reduce nosocomial (hospital acquired) infections. This position assists the Director in the compilation of statistical and clinical data for use by the Director in the preparation of various monthly, quarterly, annual reports to specific oversight committees and to leadership. The successful applicant will receive education on data collection, analysis & development of graphic presentations of surveillance data; sources of surveillance data; outbreak management; effective communications during outbreaks; annual report preparation; automated fit testing; identifying and monitoring specific infections required by The Joint Commission and CMS; compliance with infection control assessments during renovation/ construction; development of serious infection reports; mandatory notifications to the local health department and MDH for certain communicable diseases; other required activities in the Infection Prevention and Control Department, as set forth in State, national, Federal and OSHA regulations and standards.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing under the licensing requirements for Registered Nurses.

Experience: Three years of experience as a Registered Nurse to include one year in a supervisory, administrative or teaching capacity and two years in the Psychiatric option.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited college or university for one year of the required general experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in Nursing or a health related field from an accredited college or university for two years of the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing and Hospital Administration specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have experience in the following:

  • infection control or other healthcare specialty areas
  • providing in-service educational programs to adults
  • adult medical/surgical nursing experience
  • critical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills
  • performing chart and other documentation audits

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the facility with a phone number at which they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
