Main Purpose of Job

The mission of the Maryland Department of Health (MDH)'s Prevention and Health Promotion Administration (PHPA) is to improve the health of Marylanders by reducing the transmission of infectious diseases; helping impacted people live longer and healthier lives; and, protecting individuals and communities from environmental health hazards. PHPA works in partnership with local health departments, providers, community-based organizations, and public and private sector agencies to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, monitoring, and treatment of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards. 

This position will provide epidemiologic and programmatic support for surveillance and special studies of various communicable diseases of interest to the Maryland Emerging Infections Program (EIP), primarily those related to the Healthcare-Associated Infections Community Interface (HAIC) component of EIP, as well as for other EIP or related activities. This position will be responsible for conducting surveillance for specified illnesses and pathogens; refining and analyzing surveillance data; and, for assisting with case and outbreak investigations, as needed. Additionally, this position will be responsible for developing special studies, based on the sureveillance activities; writing scientific and other reports; and, communicating program information to federal, State and local stakeholders. 

This position will routinely travel to hospitals throughout the state, in order to conduct on-site medical record reviews. Program activities will be conducted, in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other EIP sites, and other federal, State and local partners. These program activities will complement the surveillance and outbreak investigative functions of MDH's PHPA's Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau (IDEORB), whose purpose is to prevent and/or reduce the incidence of communicable diseases in Maryland.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Health Care Science classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have professional experience in the area of infectious diseases, as well as experience in the area of microbiology.
