LOCATION OF POSITION

Madonna Ranger Station, 3919 Madonna Rd, Jarrettsville, MD 21084 (Harford County)

Main Purpose of Job

Position will be part of the Firewise Maryland program and assist with wildfire prevention, outreach, education, and mitigation in a multi-county area. Responsibilities will include public wildfire mitigation outreach, staffing of educational booths at public events, Smokey Bear fire prevention programs, targeted Wildland-Urban Interface community outreach and risk assessment, coordination and implementation of hazard fuel reduction projects and prescribed burning, wildfire suppression, brush chipper operation, and other duties as assigned. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalence certificate.  

Experience: Two years experience in wildland fire, volunteer or career fire department, forestry, fire prevention, environmental education, or related fields. Additional education in a related field can be substituted for experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred but not required:

Prior completion of Basic Wildland Fire Training: S-130, S-190, L-180, I-100

Class A or B Commercial Driver's License

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees appointed to this position will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
