Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to act as a research and development scientist by conducting applied research to develop new microbiology laboratory testing procedures for infectious disease agents related to newly emerging/ reemerging infections and anti-microbial resistance at the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from infectious/ communicable diseases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory, performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples, or two years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate  degree from an accredited college or university in any of the disciplines noted above for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:

  • Experience working in a public health or diagnostic Microbiology laboratory analyzing human clinical specimens for identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing of bacterial pathogens
  • Experience validating/ verifying and performing molecular amplification (PCR)- based assays for the detection of human pathogens

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
