CHIEF, DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

Established in 1898, the Maryland Public Health Laboratory System has a long tradition of protecting citizens in the region of infectious, communicable, chronic and inherited diseases, environmental hazards and act of biological or chemical terrorism by adapting and utilizing advanced testing methodologies in many scientific disciplines to detect and characterize emerging and reemerging public health threats.  The test results generated by the laboratory provide technically sound, objective and unaffiliated information to medical providers, public health officials, regulatory entities and others to guide the implementation of appropriate treatment, prevention and control measures to protect health and safety.  The Central Public Health Laboratory occupies a new five story state-of-the art facility in a bio-technology park directly adjacent to the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus in East Baltimore.  The location is easily accessible by mass transit and is just minutes away from downtown Baltimore and the inner harbor waterfront community.

MDH, Laboratories Administration, Department of Environmental Sciences, Baltimore, MD

This position functions as the Chief of the Division of Environmental Sciences of the Laboratories Administration within the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). The position delivers technical and scientific leadership while supervising, managing and providing guidance to the Administration's scientific and technical staff in environmental chemistry and microbiology practices, policies and procedures including but not limited to: writing standard operating procedures and grant proposals, quality control/quality assurance initiatives, lab safety and methods development and implementation. The position is also responsible for personnel and budgetary functions to ensure high-quality internal and external customer service. The Division Chief serves as a subject matter expert in environmental chemistry, radiochemistry and environmental microbiology testing for both internal and external partners and clients of the Laboratories Administration.

Candidates must possess a doctoral degree from an accredited academic institution in chemistry, biochemistry, physical sciences or related environmental sciences discipline and have at least 4 years of experience supervising an environmental laboratory.

The successful candidate should have the knowledge and experience required to guide/supervise the scientific operations of laboratory units within the Division of Environmental Sciences including chemical and microbiological test procedures/assays.  Good organizational skills, computer skills, verbal/written communication skills, including writing standard operation procedures, grant proposals and correspondence are essential to the work performed by the position.  

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
