Main Purpose of Job

Under direction from the Executive Director, the Director of Communications will oversee, plan and direct the day-to-day communications operations for the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC). This position will plan, execute and evaluate comprehensive communications programs that reinforce the mission of the MMCC. Areas of responsibility include media relations, internal and external communications, publications, website management, graphic design, requests for public information, marketing, and community relations. Media relations will focus on promoting a positive image of the MMCC and managing crisis communication when necessary. Supervises two outreach coordinators.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a Master's degree in communications, marketing, or a health related field required.  Ten years of progressively responsible experience in Communications and social media, preferably in a health care related field and at least three years of progressively responsible experience in managing and directing staff.

Additional experience as listed above may be substituted for the Master's degree.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should possess:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in leading and executing marketing and communication plans in a highly complex environment.
  • Knowledge of strategic marketing, communications and community health activities, development and implementation; knowledge of budget development, control and evaluation is required.
  • Experience in the health care industry.
  • Proficient skills in directing, monitoring, evaluating, and motivating the performance of staff.
  • High level of proficiency and demonstrated effectiveness in problem solving and implementing new programs related to increased departmental and organizational efficiency.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills are required to work with outside vendors/contractors, various supervisory, senior management and administrative staff and with external customers.
  • Highly effective writing, organizational and interpersonal skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

This position may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidate must be able to pass a background investigation and random drug screening tests.

SELECTION PROCESS

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
