Main Purpose of Job

This position will plan, organize, evaluate and direct all activities of the Food and Nutritional Services Division for the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS). Activities include administrates the federal Child Nutrition Program (CNP) to comply with the United State Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Department of Education guidelines and regulations. Provides oversight, technical assistance and direction to the clinical nutrition services for the DJS population and meal provision. This position is responsible for the division's budget, procurement procedures, safe food handling practices, Child Nutrition Program menus, food production, recipes, USDA commodities, record keeping, and personnel issues. Provides clinical nutrition assessment and meal plans for DJS youth with special needs. Monitors all food service purchases, contracts and interagency agreements for the provision of nutritional services at DJS facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree with an academic major in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, nutrition education, culinary arts, family and consumer sciences, or public administration.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a large-scale food service operation in an institutional, commercial, industrial or similar organization to include 4 years in a supervisory capacity.


Notes:
1. A Master’s degree in food service management, dietetics, nutrition, home economics, public administration or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the experience requirement.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dietitian and Nutritionist classifications or Dietitian and Nutritionist specialty codes in the Dietitian field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. ServSafe certification and/or Food Handlers License
2. Through knowledge of food systems management, including the purchasing, receiving, storage, preparation, and service of meals to youth is highly desirable.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in the classification must possess a current license as a Dietitian/Nutritionist from the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice.

2. Candidates must be registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) prior to completion of probationary period and must maintain a current registration during their time of employment. Applicants who are currently registered should submit proof of CDR registration with application.

3. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
