Main Purpose of Job

To make professional decisions regarding the level of impairment, the capacity for work and the vocational rehabilitation potential of disabled applicants under the Social Security Act. Efficiently process adult and childhood initial and reconsideration claims; initial continuing disability review claims.

POSITION DUTIES

Determines eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits and SupplementalSecurity Income Payments; secures appropriate medical, vocational andpsychological documentation as required by established federal standards; provides general information about Disability Determination Services; uses medical terminology to accurately describe impairments; evaluates evidence to determinethe degree and severity of disabilities in each electronic case; makes recommendations to award or deny benefits; writes determinations and defends the assessments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

EXPERIENCE:

Level I – No Experience required. Level II -- Two years of professional experience in a behavioral or social science related field or a Master’s Degree in a Behavioral or Social Science related field may be substituted for one year of the experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience with electronic case processing
  • Analytical, organizational and time management skills
  • Bilingual skills

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, and travel throughout the State are required.  Individuals selected for positions with the Maryland State Department of Education's Disability Determination Service (DDS) will go through a complete Tier 2 federal background investigation.  A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems. Any misrepresentation of academic or experience requirements for this position may result in non-selection or termination of employment.
