Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as a Senior Portfolio Manager in its Investment Division.  The Investment Division has responsibility for managing approximately $50 billion of assets, which requires managing its asset allocation, overseeing external and internal managers and implementing Board initiatives.

Main Purpose of Job

This role reports directly to the Managing Director responsible for the Public Equity Portfolio. This individual will work collaboratively with the public equity team to support the overall investment program. The Senior Portfolio Manager will be responsible for the sourcing, evaluation, recommendation and monitoring of investments as well as aiding the Managing Director in portfolio construction. Strong knowledge of global public equity markets is desired.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include regular reviews and evaluations of external and internal managers and investments; participate in meetings with current and prospective managers; assist with due diligence on existing and new investments; develop and implement internal investment strategies; manage investment databases; perform quantitative analysis; assist in the process of reviewing and negotiating investment management agreements or fund documents; work collaboratively with the operations team in the initiation and maintenance of accounts; conduct research on investment ideas; track and model investment performance and exposures; assist the Managing Director in preparing presentation materials for Investment Committee and other meetings; and participate in other projects and duties as assigned. This position will require occasional travel including internationally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college in Finance, Economics, Math, Science, Accounting, Business Administration, or similar fields of study. Other degrees may be considered in combination with an advanced degree in the fields listed above.  

Experience:  Three years of professional investment experience in public equity either focusing on external or internal management.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with a CFA or an advanced degree in fields indicated above.  Additional preference may be given to candidates who have directly managed equity investment portfolios.
