Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Agribusiness and Energy Program Manager within the Division of Business and Industry Sector Development, Office of Strategic Industries & Entrepreneurship.

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job

This position works with Maryland's Agribusiness and Energy stakeholders, providers, innovators, and entrepreneurs; targeting agribusiness and energy sectors to ensure Maryland has the resources and a conducive environment to attract new providers, assist the growth and expansion of established firms, and support innovation and new business ventures in these areas.

POSITION DUTIES

This position will supervise and direct the work of the Agriculture Industry Specialist. The main job functions include: operating as the primary link between the Department and Maryland’s Agribusiness and Energy companies; serving as the Department’s expert on industries’ related matters; and marketing Maryland as a destination for Agribusiness and Energy industry firms. Key sectors within Agribusiness include: food production, processing, packaging and all value-add activities, forest products, aquaculture, distribution and supporting infrastructure. Key areas of focus within Energy include: data center, solar and wind technologies. While this position will focus on statewide growth, rural Maryland will be a key focus area.

The selected employee will possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with high level public and private sector officials and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects and possess proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software. Statewide travel is required, as is, attendance at out of State conferences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Business or a degree relevant to the targeted industry sectors AND at six years of experience in agriculture, energy, business or economic development or related field. 

Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge of and work experience in one or more of the State Sectors listed above. Please describe in detail any job duties relating to the qualifications stated. 

The ideal candidate will be proficient in the Maryland State legislative process as it pertains to the listed sectors.
