Main Purpose of Job

A Groundskeeper is the full performance level of work in the care and maintenance of grounds, gardens and landscaped areas surrounding State buildings and along State roads and highways. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Grounds Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor or other supervisor. Employees may be subject to call-in on a 24-hour basis. Employees may be assigned to shifts to include weekends and holidays. The work may be performed in extremes of heat and cold. Employees may be exposed to noisy, dirty and uncomfortable conditions. The work may require the use of protective equipment such as goggles when operating machinery and power tools and back braces, safety shoes and gloves when performing grounds duties. The work may require working in confined spaces and at various heights and moving heavy objects. Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification. The Groundskeeper is differentiated from the and Groundskeeper Lead in that the Groundskeeper performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision while the Groundskeeper Lead assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level Groundskeepers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   None.

Experience: Six months of experience in the care and maintenance of grounds.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
