Introduction

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) provides vital technology solutions that allow the Executive Branch, State Agencies and Coordinating Offices to provide Marylanders with services that enable them to live and work more safely, efficiently and productively.

The Application Development Team is the team responsible for applying database administration skills for the purpose of improving government efficiencies, reducing government costs and lowering risk of Executive Branch, State Agencies and Coordinating Offices, to better serve the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

This position will evaluate existing databases and support the development of new databases and provide recommendations to drive business decisions. This position is responsible for business needs assessment and requirements gathering; database evaluation; solutions planning, development and evaluation; system design and specifications; script development; solutions implementation and support; data analytics; documentation and training support.

The Maryland Department of Information Technology is looking for an individual with strong technical abilities to ensure the integrity, performance, reliability and security of all databases. 

Duties to include: installing, configuring and supporting database management systems in a Microsoft Windows environment, developing and documenting conceptual and detailed designs for database management systems, developing and documenting procedures and practices for database management systems, developing, implementing and administering disaster recovery plans for database management systems, installing, configuring and/or supporting the following database applications: Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, and IBM DB2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology related field to include course work in database management systems.

Experience: One year of experience designing, developing, implementing, maintaining and controlling database management systems for computers.

Notes: 

1. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate plus thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology-related field to include course work in database management systems may be substituted for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and one additional year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining applications systems and programs using generally accepted computer programming languages or maintaining and modifying operating systems for computers may be substituted for the required education.

3. Experience operating computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Database Administration classifications or Database Administration specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Our preferred candidate will have one or more of the following:

Experience designing and administering databases using IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server;

Experience with requirements gathering, solutions planning, development and implementation;

Ability to create database tables using SQL or other queries and/or stored procedures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached or will be furnished with a pager.
