Applications are currently being accepted for seasonal hourly positions in the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Plant Protection Program. This is contractual employment and workers will be paid for actual hours worked only.  Contractual paid leave and health benefits available.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Maryland Department of Agriculture Headquarters - Annapolis, Maryland.

Main Purpose of Job

May- October 2019.  Seasonal technicians needed to assist in survey and detection activities for various exotic insect pests, including spotted lanternfly.  Extensive travel is required, using a department vehicle.  There are six (6) openings.

POSITION DUTIES

Multiple positions available.  Duties may include the following:

Collection of insect pests from trap locations throughout Maryland, maintenance and upkeep on traps as required, (2 Openings)

Survey of insects and trees throughout northeast Maryland (Spotted Lanternfly Project). (4 Openings)

All positions require accurate data collection, use of equipment such as GPS units and personal computers, and may also involve interactions with the public.  Work will involve exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoor exposures.  Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment.  Training will be provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED required.  Each candidate must be at least 18 years of age and possess a driver's license valid in Maryland, with no more than 5 points on the candidate's driving record.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience with biological field work preferred but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid Driver's License required, with no more than 5 points on driving record.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
