Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for multiple seasonal contractual positions located at Potomac-Garrett State Forest in Oakland, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

MAINTENANCE WORKER (1 vacancy/full-time; Monday-Thursday) ($10.50/ hr)
Contract Period: March - December 2019
This position will assist with the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment of the State Forest. The work entails independently performing maintenance work, including campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventative maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways including mowing, weed eating, painting etc. Other duties may include but are not limited to: planting trees, habitat improvement projects and boundary line maintenance. Candidates must be able to lift up to 70 lbs. and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain. Employee may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays.

MAINTENANCE WORKER w/CAMPGROUND OPERATIONS (1 vacancy/full-time; Wednesday-Saturday) ($11.53/ hr)
Contract Period: March - December 2019
This position is responsible for all duties associated with campground operations including fee collection in four remote primitive camping areas; cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites, documenting forest activities and general maintenance of State Forest facilities. As first line of contact with State Forest visitors and campers, this position requires good communication skills and is expected to convey knowledge of forest rules and regulations, forest attractions and recreational opportunities including information about the surrounding areas of tourism and attractions. Weekend work required for operational duties, with weekday duties being more general maintenance and labor. Candidates must be able to lift up to 70 lbs. and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.

CAMPGROUND OPERATIONS (1 vacancy/part-time; Friday-Saturday - 16 hrs/ week) ($11.53/ hr)
Contract Period: May - September 2019

This position is responsible for all duties associated with campground operations including fee collection in four remote primitive camping areas; cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites; documenting forest activities, and general maintenance of State Forest facilities. As first line of contact with campers and all forest visitors, this position requires adequate knowledge of forest rules and regulations, forest attractions and recreational opportunities and information regarding the surrounding areas. Working weekends and holidays is required. Candidates must be able to lift up to 70 lbs. and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.

Education: None.

Experience: None.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

A valid driver’s license is required and driving record will be checked prior to hire.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
