Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to conduct radioactive materials inspections, investigations, and surveys necessary to enforce Maryland Regulations Governing Radiation Protection and to protect public health and safety. This position is responsible for radiological investigations and at times may work on special projects as a team member to inspect larger facilities. The incumbent will perform work which may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings during some industrial radioactive material inspections.
The incumbent will perform work involving potential radiation exposure during routine inspections and emergency responses. The incumbent will also be required to climb ladders, collect radioactive samples for laboratory analysis and drive a distance up to 170 miles to and from inspection sites. During site inspections, protective equipment is required and may include goggles, gloves, mask, hard hat, safety shoes and protective clothing to prevent radioactive material contamination.
The incumbent of this position will occasionally work after hours and on-call 24/7 for Radiological Emergencies. The incumbent will be required to maintain a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland with 5 or less points on their driving record.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credits in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience: Two years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management or related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for the required two years of experience.
4. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in a mathematical, biological or physical science for one year of the required experience.
5. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in radiation safety; radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field for one year of the required experience.
6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science or Physics;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
- Experience generating database reports;
- Strong process and analytical improvement skills;
- Proficient with the use of radiation survey instrumentation;
- Familiar with licensing and permit regulations and procedures;
- Willingness to work as a team member;
- Customer service experience interacting with internal and external customers in a business setting.
