Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 190,000 active members, 40,000 vested members, and more than 160,000 retires and beneficiaries.

Main Purpose of Job

This contractual position works in the Agency's Retirement Processing Section of the Benefits Processing Unit. It is responsible for processing estimate requests (17,00+ annually)and final retirement requests (6,000+ annually). Processing of these requests involves determining eligibility for retirement at requested date, reviewing and verifying creditable and eligibility service balances, calculating Average Final Compensation, calculating additional retirement credit service to be earned and member contributions to be paid, and calculating additional retirement credit for unused sick leave balances. This position is responsible for working or approving thirty-five (35) requests each day.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience as defined above at the rate of one year experience for 30 credit hours of education for up to 60 credit hours of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required education and experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

*  Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, or mathematics related majors;

*  At least one year of demonstrated experience processing customer requests involving eligibility determination and/or benefit calculations (e.g. banking, insurance, lending, etc.);

*  At least one year of demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.  You may be asked to complete a supplemental questionnaire.  The supplemental questionnaire may be used as part of the rating process.  Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.
