LOCATION OF POSITION

MDH/Spring Grove Hospital Center Campus, Central Intake Unit, Catonsville, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Health's Behavioral Health Administration is seeking Social Workers who will provide direct social work services, particularly around admission and evaluation, to patients/clients who are referred to the Intake Unit, a 24-bed forensic inpatient facility that conducts evaluations and treatments for court-ordered individuals diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. The Intake Unit is a High Acute Psychiatric Unit, located on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital Center, in Catonsville, Maryland.

This position will provide direct social work services to clients in the Intake Unit for evaluation as to appropriate placement and/or discharge, as well as evaluate case situations and present information pertinent to a client's diagnosis and treatment, including his/her social background and family, to other members of the health care team. This position will also interview clients and family members, in order to determine the nature and degree of problems, and arrange, as necessary, medical or psychiatric examinations which will help identify problems pertinent to diagnosis and treatment.

In addition, this position will determine if a crisis situation exists. If it does, he/she will immediately initiate appropriate intervention techniques and interpret psychiatric, as well as other health care treatments, to clients or families, while also helping with personal and environmental difficulties which interfere with obtaining maximum benefit from that care.

Finally, this position will work with other members of a multi-disciplinary health care team, in order to increase their understanding of any social and emotional factors underlying a client's health problems.

This position will also perform other related duties.
