Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Savage River State Forest, Garrett County

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as the Savage River State Forest Manager responsible for the operations, supervision, administration, and resource management of the 58,000-acre Savage River State Forest. Primary duties include directing, planning, organizing, administering, and implementing Departmental goals for management of State Forest lands. These include the development and implementation of both long and short range management planning including the Sustainable Forest Management Plan and the Annual Work Plans, and achieving and maintaining dual third party forest certification from the two most recognized auditing organizations in the conservation community. Responsibilities involve implementing objectives to manage the forest utilizing currently accepted ecosystem management principles and practices to provide the multiple use benefits demanded of the State's public forest lands while protecting the sustainability of these forest resources. Responsible for managing all forest operations such as forest visitor services, timber harvesting, resource development and protection, collection and processing of forest system revenue, recreation, invasive species monitoring and control, interpretive services, property management, and maintenance. These activities directly support the Departmental goal of conserving the natural resources of Maryland and protecting the Chesapeake Bay.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest management, natural resources management, parks and recreation, business management, education, history, social sciences, or a related natural science from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience supervising personnel engaged in park or forest operations work.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience as defined above for the required education at the rate of one year of experience, for up to four years of the required education.  

2. Applicants may substitute additional experience in park or forest operations work at the rate of two years for each year of the required supervisory experience for up to two years of the required experience.  

3. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in forestry, forestry management, nature resources management, parks and recreation, business administration, education, history, or a related natural resources field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.  

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Recruitment is limited to Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service employees.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to assignment in any county of the State. Upon permanent appointment, the employee may be required to reside in the county or region assigned.

3. Employees in this classification must be trained in First Responder Training or other equivalent first aid training.
