Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide administrative support to the Workers' Compensation Medical and Rehabilitation (Support Services Division). This work is necessary to facilitate the Division's contribution to the Commission's mission of providing equal and fair service to disabled covered employees. This position is designed to relieve administrative staff of the clerical requirements amassed in the process of receiving, investigating, and processing medical claims, rehabilitation and medical provider applications and orders, and the associated forms and files. This position obtains, analyzes and interprets information in order to apply rules, regulations and standards in accordance with laws; assists in the administrative functions of the program with moderate supervision; identifies issues with record management and addresses them under consultation with the direct supervisor; consults with program heads and administrative officials regarding policies, trends, and interpretation of data and program needs; researches and compiles data as directed; prepares statistical tables, charts and reports, work-flow charts; and assists in planning and implementing new or revised procedures and practices. Assists with Support Services telephone calls and directs inquiries to the appropriate staff member.

POSITION DUTIES

Process/update Order Nisi, Final Order Nisi or Denial of additional payment for services letters as required; process vocational rehabilitation orders or denial letters after vocational rehabilitation plans are reviewed.

Assist in process medical claims for services per established laws based on the fee schedule; research and review all orders of withdrawal, settlements, and/or orders denying compensability of claims for  all incoming medical claims; process all incomplete correspondence or claim information submitted by entities and send the information back for completion.

Assist the coding specialist in reviewing CMS updates and developing all updated yearly fee schedules (Physician’s, Ambulatory, Anesthesiology, Orthopedic/Neurological Surgical, and Non-valued CPT fee schedule by use of Excel and Word; assist the coding specialist with coordinating WCC Medical Fee Guide meetings, including scheduling and recording minutes. Updating CPT data values according as CMS value or schedule change per approval of the Commission.

Maintain library of information/tool related to documentation guidelines and coding, assist in organizing office files for the medical and rehabilitation division. Answers office calls; respond to emails and contacting entities within 24 hours of receipt.

Serve as back up for both the coding specialist and claim reviewer processing claims or applications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

Experience: None

Notes:  

1. Candidates may substitute one year of experience in administrative or professional work for the required education, at the rate of one year of experience for 30 credit hours, for up to 60 credit hours of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies  on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The following is a required qualification. Candidates MUST possess the following:

Six (6) months experience working with CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications

1. 1 year experience in an administrative or professional position
2. 1 year experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
3. Experience working with health care provides, attorneys, and public and private agencies
4. Ability to calculate reimbursement payments using a fee guide.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year. 

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
