The Office of the Public Defender is seeking applicants with excellent customer service, communication and computer skills to fill a full-time Office Clerk I position in our Baltimore City Records Division. The Office Clerk I will be working with a unique case management system, and court systems, updating trial dockets, searching and verifying client information, data entry and file maintenance duties.  Standing, moving, bending and lifting objects up to 50lbs or more is a requirement for this position.

Main Purpose of Job

An Office Clerk I is the intermediate level of work performing clerical duties which are clear-cut and typically found in office settings, such as filing, photocopying, scanning, posting data, stamping and sorting mail and other material and directing telephone calls and visitors. Employees in this classification do not supervise other Office Clerks. Employees in this classification receive moderate supervision from an Office Supervisor or other clerical or administrative supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Six months experience performing clerical duties in an office environment.

Notes: 

1. Additional experience performing clerical duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Six months clerical training with three courses in subjects such as keyboarding, clerical math, word processing, spreadsheets, database, graphics presentation, proofreading, or office etiquette may be substituted for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical or Office Services specialty codes in the Clerical Support field of work on a year-for year basis for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Excellent customer service, communication and computer skills.

The ability to  work with a unique case management system, and court systems, updating trial dockets, searching and verifying client information, data entry, filing.

Only Office of the Public Defender employees apply. 

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be admitted to the examination for this classification.  Successful candidates will be ranked as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, OR QUALIFIED and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application.  Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.  Report all experience and education that is related to this position.
