Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

This is a 10.5 month position.

This position serves to provide audiology services to students on the Columbia and Frederick campuses, ages birth to 21. Audiology services include diagnostic assessments, functional listening evaluations, and amplification fitting and maintenance (including hearing aids, cochlear implants, and osseo integrated devices). The campus audiologist serves as an IEP/IFSP team member and supports classroom staff, specialists, and families through consult and training services. The audiologist will also provide service to infants born in Maryland who are referred for hearing screening follow up (ABR & OAE).

POSITION DUTIES

Assesses hearing status using standard, conditioned play, or visual reinforcement audiometry, as appropriate;

Evaluates auditory milestone development and word recognition skills for a variety of functional listening levels;

Orders, fits and verifies amplification devices and earmolds from a variety of manufacturers;

Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports on student services and progress;

Participates in team and community meetings;

Serves as an IEP team member, determines present levels of performance and functional levels;

Uses developmentally appropriate activities, and a variety of strategies and approaches to maximize student participation in audiologic assessments;

Communicates with IEP team members regarding a student’s hearing status and amplification use;

Consults with outside agency audiologists regarding student audiology services;

Conducts and participates in seminars, in-service and professional training programs;

May collaborate with the Early Childhood team in order to provide family based services, such as home visits and/or attending parent support groups.

Supports the Bilingual Education concepts throughout the School;

Supports classroom staff with device troubleshooting and consults as to how students would benefit from auditory learning experiences during the educational day.

Applicants must have:

Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of pediatric audiology;

Knowledge of the operation and care of equipment used in the practice of audiology;

Ability to perform diagnostic audiology and auditory skill evaluations and treatment;

Ability to recognize changes in patients and to revise their treatment program as indicated;

Ability to prepare and deliver reports.

Assessments should be conducted with the unique Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HOH) population in mind. Considerations of hearing levels and language use are essential to meeting the needs of this population. Knowledge and experience conducting Infant threshold search ABR and diagnostic OAE assessments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of clinical experience in pediatric audiology;  Must have basic level of sign language and be willing to improve American Sign Language skills to achieve fluency.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology is preferred, but not required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568.)
