Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

Establish and monitor behavior programs for students in the school. Responsible for defining behaviors, collecting and analyzing data, designing programs, working with staff to implement programs, monitoring and updating the programs, and submitting all appropriate reports related to the programs. Help to maintain a positive and safe environment by enforcing school rules and policies, and act as a liaison to parents, dorm staff, support personnel, the community, and staff. Provide training to staff in the principles of behavior and crisis prevention and management. May provide direct service to students in an individual and/or group format. Work closely with the Mental Health Team to provide consultation and support to school staff and families. In the absence of the assistant principal, the behavior specialist may temporarily become the point of contact for the department.

POSITION DUTIES

Intervene in occurrences of inappropriate student behavior for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills following the MSD Code of Conduct. Conduct functional behavior assessments, and develop and monitor behavior intervention plans. Provide individual and group support to students, counseling them on how to deal with crisis resolutions, social skills, and/or life skills. Record student discipline entries in the school’s student information system for the purpose of maintaining up to date and accurate records. Provide support and direction to faculty and staff, supervise and/or work with interns/practicum students and offer training to staff and students on various topics related to students well-being. Participate in IEP meetings as needed, as well as in clinical team meetings or other school support staff meetings regarding behavior or support management. Design programs and establish goals specifically designed to address the presenting behaviors. Maintain high visibility (e.g. halls, regular classrooms, cafeteria, student activities, greeting students, etc.) for the purpose of building familiarity and trust with students and staff. Facilitate communication between staff, students, and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, and/or resolving conflicts. Assist the assistant principal in responding to families and/or community concerns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Social work, or related field.  Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience: Two years of full-time experience with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with special needs preferred. Must have general understanding and/or background in mental health of deaf students and behavior management programs and techniques.  Knowledge of federal and state laws desired.  Fluency in ASL and written English required.  Ability to work with a variety of constituents required.  Skills in organization, supervision, and coordination of activities required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of the Deaf Community preferred. Knowledge of curricula for deaf students with special needs desired.
