The Maryland Historical Trust, an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking an Executive Director for Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland. JPPM, the State Museum of Archaeology and a center for both regional and statewide archaeological research, features a Visitors Center, a reconstructed Indian Village, the historic Point Farm House and Garden, a series of self-guided trails, and various school and public education programs and events. JPPM is also home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, an archaeological research, conservation, and curation facility which houses over 8 million artifacts from across the state. JPPM has an annual budget of approximately $4 million and is presently staffed by approximately 20 permanent and 12 contractual staff members. (To learn more, go to: http://www.jefpat.org/.)
The Executive Director must have enthusiasm for the archaeological subject matter at JPPM; an appreciation for the diversity of its programs, unique geography, and environmental resources; and a commitment to its educational mission. The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial and creative thinker with strong interpersonal skills and a solid background of effective staff and volunteer management. The Executive Director must be a dynamic leader and team builder capable of maximizing the talents and skill sets of an interdisciplinary staff. Proven skills in goal setting followed by implementation, collaborative problem solving, and development experience are required. The successful candidate will be expected to reach out to JPPM’s many and diverse audiences to build long-term support for current operations and future initiatives. The Executive Director must also be an effective and dynamic spokesperson in the community and with the media.

Main Purpose of Job
The Executive Director is in charge of all programs, operations, and capital projects at JPPM. The Executive Director conducts and oversees master and strategic planning, long term and annual goal setting and evaluation, policy development and implementation, budget development and management, reporting, personnel actions, coordination with support groups and advisory committees, fundraising, facility maintenance and development, and other decisions related to the program areas of Administration, Education, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. These programs are currently organized as follows:
Administration - Provides support and direction to the entire JPPM staff to assist to fulfill JPPM's mission; provides facilities maintenance and support in the development of capital projects.
Education - Provides educational opportunities on all aspects of archaeology through on-site, outreach, and web-based programming, exhibits, and interpretation and works with JPPM's staff and volunteers in the planning, design and production of graphics, signage, and exhibits.
Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory - Studies, conserves, and curates artifacts that belong to the State or that were found in Maryland. Makes artifacts from the collections available for scholars to examine, and for loan to institutions wishing to exhibit and interpret them. Provides technical assistance and educational programs for local and national museums, government agencies, historical societies, and the general public.
- Program Planning and Monitoring - Leads development and implementation of goals, policies, and priorities that will ensure JPPM’s advancement and continued program excellence. Has primary responsibility for the development, implementation, and oversight of JPPM strategic plan. Monitors and reports on progress in achieving goals and implementation of strategic plan. Monitors day-to-day delivery of programs and services. Evaluates adherence to professional museum standards.
- Budget and Personnel - Prepares annual operating budget recommendations. Develops, implements, and monitors assigned budget. Directly responsible for all project and sub-program activities which operate out of JPPM with responsibility to federal, state, county, and private funding sources. Provides direct supervision to the sub-program area leads as well as to four Administration staff. Coordinates staff development and training. Establishes a positive, safe, and healthy work environment in accordance with all appropriate regulations.
- Outreach and Public Relations - Serves as a visible ambassador for JPPM. Acts as JPPM’s primary external contact and spokesperson including interaction with the media, affinity organizations, professional associations, and governing bodies. Develops and implements an effective public relations program. Represents JPPM’s interest on the JPPM Advisory Committee. Serves as principal liaison with Morgan State University/Academy of Natural Sciences Estuarine Research Center at JPPM for facility and program coordination and oversight. Serves as liaison for Friends of JPPM, Inc. Serves on the Board of the Solomon’s Environmental and Archaeological Research Consortium (SEARCH) and as the staff representative to the Southern Maryland Museum Association. Acts as a member of the Division’s Senior Staff.
- Fundraising and Development - Serves as principal fundraiser, working in cooperation with JPPM staff and others in the identification of grant, sponsorship, and revenue generation opportunities that are compatible with JPPM’s mission. Assists in the writing of or review of major capital and operating grants. Works closely with the Friends of JPPM in the identification of fundraising priorities and opportunities. Develops and maintains effective relationships with funders and donors, including local, state, and federal government agencies as well as individuals and organizations. Identifies new initiatives and partnerships related to revenue generation opportunities.
- Capital Project Administration - Leads JPPM’s facility capital development projects including coordination with the Department of General Services and Department of Budget and Management. Prepares capital program and capital budgets and participates in executive and legislative branch hearings. Prioritizes and manages direction of facility maintenance related projects, safety and security issues through monthly meetings of the Safety Committee, and other issues related to the operation of a complex facility. The position will often work evenings or weekends to accommodate activities such as representing the organization at public events.
This is a management service position which serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.
Education: Master’s degree in museum studies, archaeology, anthropology, public history, public administration, historic preservation, architectural history, or related field.
Experience: Five years of progressive management experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with managing a diverse interdisciplinary group of staff and volunteers.
Experience with fundraising and developing and maintaining donor/funder relations.
Experience with the management of historic properties, museums, or complex facilities.
