Main Purpose of Job

To assist the maintenance staff with various preventive maintenance and repairs that are required within a large State facility.

POSITION DUTIES

Works on the grounds to trim grass, trim trees, rake leaves and remove trash;  serves as an assistant to the tradesmen to complete maintenance related work and perform general preventive maintenance related tasks;  drives vehicles to pick-up/ deliver supplies, equipment, mail/packages, etc.;  will perform general labor duties such as moving furniture, arranging conference rooms, cleaning up shops and mechanical rooms;  will assist with snow removal and clean-up during the winter months.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a current motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Basic knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used to maintain and service State buildings and grounds; knowledge of the safe use and maintenance of power tools and equipment used to maintain and service State buildings and grounds; must be able to lift heavy items; ability to follow instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Must possess a current motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. 
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects up to 50lbs.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.  

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
