Main Purpose of Job

A Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Trainee is the entry level of vision and hearing screening work in a local health department. The main purpose of this position is to protect and promote the health of school-aged children in Queen Anne's County, in both the public and private sectors, by assisting in the annual vision and hearing screenings within the school systems as assigned. This is a full-time contractual position working only during the school season, typically from mid August to no longer than February.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalence certificate.

Experience:  None.

NOTE:

Applicants may substitute experience operating audiometric and vision screening equipment in a vision and hearing screening program on a year for year basis for up to four years of the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must be able to work during the school season typically from mid August to no longer than February.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants may be given a medical examination and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the work required of the position prior to appointment.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
