Main Purpose of Job

A Dentist III, Residential is overall in charge of the dental health services programs for physically disabled, mentally ill or developmentally disabled patients or clients at residential treatment facilities or for inmates of correctional facilities.

POSITION DUTIES

At the MD Department of Juvenile Services (DJS), the part-time 60% Dentist III, Residential position will provide and oversee comprehensive dental services at the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center (BCJJC) to male youth detained at BCJJC and female youth detained at the Waxter Children’s Center. The Dentist III positon functions as part of a health team providing interdisciplinary care to detained youth supervises dental support staff or trainees at the facility and supports the DJS Medical Director in performing continuous quality improvement practices to include developing policies and procedures related to dental services in DJS facilities. The highly preferred candidate will possess at least three years post residency clinical experience and possess at least one year of experience in the practice of pediatric dentistry working with adolescents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the State Board of Dental Examiners under the licensing requirements for Dentists.

Experience: Three years of experience in the practice of dentistry with two years of the required experience in an institutional setting or a public health program.

Note: 1. A Master’s degree in public health may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dental Officer classifications or Dental Corpsman or Officer specialty codes in the dental field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. More than three years post residency clinical experience in an institutional setting or a public health program.

2. At least one year experience in the practice of pediatric dentistry working with adolescents.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Dentist from the State Board of Dental Examiners, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215-2299.

2. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess or be eligible to obtain controlled substances registration certificates as issued by the Federal government and the State of Maryland in order to prescribe narcotic medication.

3. Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants may be given a medical examination prior to appointment to determine their ability to perform the work of the position.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the Minimum Qualifications and possess a current license as a Dentist from the State Board of Dental Examiners will be admitted to the evaluation for this classification and will be placed on the eligible list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED. Candidates shall be certified to the eligible list for a period of one year.   This list will be used by the DJS hiring agency to select employees.
