Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS). The resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future recruitment's for  DPSCS.

Main Purpose of Job

This position functions at the advanced staff level, serving as the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director of Field Support Services (FSS). In this capacity, the incumbent plans, coordinates, evaluates and administers administrative and operational components of the Executive Director’s office that include, but are not limited to, public information legislation, litigation, programming and application of policies and procedures as well as research national best practices pertaining to programs and services governed by Field Support Services.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Handles service of court documents and ensures the Attorney General’s office receives copies.
  • Prepares letters requesting representation and representation agreements. Secures the employee’s signature.
  • Research incidents, gathers reports, documents, photos, etc., for the Attorney General’s office.
  • Assist the Assistant Attorneys General in preparation of affidavits or statement by employees.
  • Contacts allied agencies for information on current laws and regulations.
  • Reviews current and proposed policies and procedures to ensure all regulations (i.e, Annotated Code, COMAR, DPSCS Secretary’s Directives, etc.) are complied with.
  • Reviews draft directives as requested by the DPSCS Policy Office and coordinates responses from all departments under FSS.
  • Researches evidence-based practices to support policy development/revision.
  • Represents of the Office of Field Support Services on committees, work groups and special projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience working with offenders in a criminal justice sector.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year  of experience conducting policy review. 
One year of experience with inmate programs. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
