Main Purpose of Job

This is an entry level of professional counseling where knowledge and skill regarding the assessment and treatment of inmates with a serious mental illness is required. Graduate level education and training in the specialty areas of behavior management and cognitive behavioral treatment is needed. As a Graduate level counselor this individual must be clinically supervised and under the purview of a Board Licensed Professional Counselor with a Supervisor designation. This position applies directly to the mission specific nature of the Maryland Correctional Training Center and the desire to implement effective programming for medium security inmates.

POSITION DUTIES

Evaluate, assess, & diagnose inmates who have a broad range of mental health diagnoses.

Work with the inmate to develop and implement an individual treatment plan.

Develop & implement behavioral management plans for inmates engaging maladaptive behaviors.

Maintain a spreadsheet of inmates who are actively receiving services via psychology/ psychiatry and / or have received services within the past two years. This includes but is not limited to inmates with an SMI and inmates on segregation.

Conduct individual counseling and group therapy sessions, specializing in those who have serious mental illness, the segregation population, and the dually diagnosed with substance abuse difficulties.

Develop & implement therapeutic group protocols utilizing evidenced-based therapies & treatment interventions.

Provide crisis intervention for all inmates including those who have serious mental illness and inmates who are experiencing suicidal ideation, have made a suicidal gesture and / or an attempt.

Keep abreast of professional literature and attend special conferences and seminars.

Maintain licensing standards for continued education.

Attend regularly clinical supervision meetings with the licensed supervisor in accordance with applicable law.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists under the requirements for Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC).

Experience: None.

Note: These requirements are established by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists. The Department of Budget and Management, Office of Personnel Services and Benefits does not have the authority to accept substitutions or equivalents.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:

1. In accordance with Health Occupations Title 17 and Code of Maryland Regulations 10.58.01.09, a candidate placed in this classification must be licensed as a Graduate Professional Counselor by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.

2. Employees certified as a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) may practice graduate professional counseling for 2 years under the supervision of an approved supervisor. As required by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists, these employees must possess certification as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) by the end of this 2 year period.

3. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
