Introduction

The Maryland Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS) Cadet positions are opportunities for young men and women to experience the various duties and responsibilities performed by Maryland State Correctional Officers.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Positions are located throughout the State of Maryland at DPSCS Correctional Facilities.

Main Purpose of Job

To provide an opportunity for young men and women, to experience the various duties and responsibilities performed by Correctional Officers of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services in preparation for and acceptance and entry into the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Correctional Academy. The Cadet Program is a provisional position only; a cadet who has attained their twenty-first birthday is only eligible to serve in the position until his or her acceptance and entry in the next available correctional academy class.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Processes and assorts various pieces of mail coming into and leaving out of an institution or facility. 
  • Assists with the Recruiters, recruiting for personnel for DPSCS employment.
  • Answers telephone calls, takes messages, responds to inquiries and redirects callers to proper person.
  • Assists with fleet issues; scheduling maintenance, completion of various required state and agency forms and processes for vehicles assigned to an institution.
  • Assists with Property Management issues, including the completion of State and agency forms, tracking inventory and other state or agency property mandates.
  • Reads, comprehends and acts on information contained in various forms of written documents.  Completes forms, procedural reports and other documents concisely, legibly and accurately.
  • Uses a computer to complete written reports and other clerical duties as assigned.
  • Assist with the delivery and distribution of supplies, materials or equipment that is used in a correctional facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designee provided that at no time cadets perform duties of a custodial nature.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Md. State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience:  None

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 1.  U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status

 2.  Must be between the age of 18 and 20

 3.  A completed background investigation

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications, successfully complete the written examination and hiring process will be placed on the employment eligible list.  The list will be used by the DPSCS to select employees for at least one year.
