The Social Worker II, Health Services provides direct services within a health care setting to clients in a special population program, such as mentally ill, adolescents or substance abusers. The main purpose of this position is to evaluate case situations and present information to other members of the health care team on clients, families and social background pertinent to diagnosis and treatment; interview clients and family members to determine nature and degree of problems; provide individual and group therapy and arranges; as necessary, medical or psychiatric examinations to help identify problems pertinent to diagnosis and treatment; help clients to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing self-understanding and to respond constructively to treatment and assist in adjustment leading to and following the completion of treatment; determine if a crisis situation exists and, if it does, immediately initiate appropriate intervention techniques. The selected candidate must be available to work a minimum of two nights a week.

Education:  Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

Experience:

1. Two years experience rendering clinical social work services in a health care or treatment setting subsequent to the receipt of an,approved Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or Social Work specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

The successful applicant must be available to work a minimum of two nights a week.

1.  Candidates must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker, Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Testing Unit. A copy of your license must be attached to your application.

2.  Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application. Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
