Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a contractual Collections Assistant at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 67 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab). JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources.  For more information, visit www.jefpat.org.

POSITION DUTIES

The purpose of the position is to perform a variety of artifact collections management duties under the direction of the MAC Lab’s Curator of State Collections.

1.       Preparing archaeological collections for a long-term storage 
2.       Surveying and assessing the condition of collections and their storage requirements 
3.       Identifying artifacts in need of stabilization and conservation 
4.       Rehousing collections in archival materials 
5.       Assisting with processing incoming collections 
6.       Assisting with maintaining the collections management databases and digital data associated with the collections
7.       Assisting with the management of artifacts on loan 
8.       Assisting with the creation of type collections and artifacts displays

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:   Three years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree with preference for degrees in the following areas: anthropology, archaeology, history, museum studies or a related field.

Experience:

Experience working in archaeological or museum collections management.

Experience in archaeological lab work.

Experience with digital data management.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates may be responsible for providing their own transportation as needed to access meetings, remote locations, and job destinations as assigned.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
