Main Purpose of Job
A Peer Recovery Specialist I, Certified is the entry level of work, in the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), providing peer recovery support services to clients with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, and/or co-occurring disorders to begin and maintain a path to recovery. The main purpose of this position is to learn to provide peer recovery support services to clients diagnosed with substance use disorders or co-occurring disorders; learn to advocate for clients by speaking on personal experience regarding substance use; learn to support clients throughout recovery process and encourage them to take empowering actions to regain control over their lives; learn to meet with clinical staff to provide input into client recovery plan; learn to discuss recovery plan with clients and their families.; learn to participate directly in planning and carrying out recovery-oriented activities with client population; learn to interact effectively with clients by modeling appropriate behaviors; learn to provide community resource information (housing, employment, education, transportation, etc.); provide transportation and supervision of patients for off-unit programs, crisis transports, and other special needs; function as liaison with recovery community; facilitate AA/NA fellowship meetings for clients; learn to assist with urinalysis collection and learn to prepare reports and documentation.

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
