Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Smallwood State Park in Marbury, Maryland; Cedarville State Forest in Brandywine, Maryland; Calvert Cliffs State Park in Lusby, Maryland; Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary in Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

PARK RANGER ($11 to $14/ hour)
Smallwood State Park (3 vacancies)
Cedarville State Forest (3 vacancies)
Calvert Cliffs State Park (1 vacancy)

A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Provide visitors with park information and regulations
• Register campers
• Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bath houses and restrooms
• General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles
• Monitor recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking and biking

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER ($11 to $15/ hour)
Smallwood State Park (2 vacancies)
Cedarville State Forest (2 vacancies)
Calvert Cliffs State Park (1 vacancy)
Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary (2 vacancies)

The Seasonal Park Maintenance position is responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or recreation area. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Clean restrooms, shelters and campsites
• Refill bathroom supplies
• Removal of litter
• Maintenance of facilities and grounds
• Mow and trim grass
• Painting, electric, carpentry, and plumbing work
• Upkeep of vehicles, equipment and vessels
• Use of hand tools and operation of power equipment

PARK NATURALIST ($11 to $15/ hour)
Smallwood State Park (1 vacancy)
Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary (1 vacancy)
The Seasonal Park Naturalist develops and leads interpretive programming at a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Develop and present interpretive and environmental education programs
• Assist with volunteers and youth programs
• Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials
• Advise the public of general park rules and regulations
• Operation and maintenance of nature centers, buildings and grounds.
• May include live animal care and handling associated with the Scales and Tales program

VISITOR SERVICES ATTENDANT ($11 to $14/ hour)
Smallwood State Park (1 vacancy)
Cedarville State Forest (1 vacancy)
The Visitor Services position provides secretarial and financial duties for a State Park. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicant must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Answer phones and greet customers
• Process mail
• Prepare cash deposits and supporting paperwork
• Photocopy and type documents
• Enter data using Excel spreadsheets
• Process seasonal contracts and seasonal timesheets
• Process bills for payment

CONCESSION ATTENDANT
Smallwood State Park (5 vacancies) ($11/ hour)

The Concession Attendant provide information to visitors about park facilities, programs and regulations. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Operate a cash register in the sale of park merchandise
• Maintain inventory of supplies, materials and products
• Complete required reports
• Administer canoe and kayak rentals
• Assist with litter pickup near concession facility

CONCESSION MANAGER
Smallwood State Park (1 vacancy) ($11 to $15/ hour)
The Concession Manager manages merchandising of park-specific items for sale in a park camp store, beach area store or boat area store. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Operate a cash register in the sale of park merchandise
• Prepare and cook food
• Clean camp store
• Stock merchandise
• Order merchandise for sale and maintain inventory
• Assist park visitors

CONTACT STATION ATTENDANT
Rosaryville State Park (2 vacancies) ($11/ hour)
The Contact Station Attendant provides a first line of visitor contact. Attendants provide information to visitors about park facilities, programs and regulations. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility location and generally includes, but are not limited to:
• Operate a cash register in the sale of merchandise
• Provide visitors with park information and regulations
• Complete required opening/closing reports

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
