LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Elk Neck State Park in North East, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.
LEAD SEASONAL RANGER (2 vacancies)
A Lead Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, intermediate level of work in the operation of a State Park. The position defers from the Seasonal Park Ranger position in that selected candidates, in addition to completing the tasks asked of every Park Ranger, will help with the planning and coordination of the park’s campground, concessions OR education efforts. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Provide visitors with park information and regulations within the park’s contact stations, stores, campground and day-use areas
● Use of a computer and a point of sale system to register campers, complete reports and sell park merchandise
● Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bathhouses and restrooms
● General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles
● Monitor (via motorized vehicles, bicycles, and on foot) recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking, biking and swimming/beach area
● May assist with the development and presentation of interpretive and environmental education programs
● May assist with the stocking and inventory of the concessions buildings
PARK RANGER (10 vacancies)
A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Provide visitors with park information and regulations within the park’s contact stations, stores, campground and day-use areas
● Use of a computer and a point of sale system to register campers, complete reports and sell park merchandise
● Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bathhouses and restrooms
● General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles
● Monitor (via motorized vehicles, bicycles, and on foot) recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking, biking and swimming/beach area
● May assist with the development and presentation of interpretive and environmental education programs
PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER (8 vacancies)
The Seasonal Park Maintenance position is responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or recreation area. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Clean restrooms, shelters, cabins and campsites
● Refill bathroom supplies
● Removal of litter
● Maintenance of facilities and grounds
● Mow and trim grass
● Tree and brush removal work
● Wood splitting
● Painting, electric, carpentry and plumbing work
● Upkeep of vehicles, equipment and vessels
● Use of hand tools and operation of power equipment
PARK NATURALIST (1 vacancy)
The Seasonal Park Naturalist develops and leads interpretive programming at a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Develop and present interpretive and environmental education programs
● Assist with volunteers and youth programs
● Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials using computer programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher
● Advise the public of general park rules and regulations
● Operation and maintenance of nature center, buildings and grounds
● Live animal care and handling associated with the Scales & Tales program (snakes and turtles only)
● Hike trails of varying difficulty and lead canoe/ kayak tours on open waters
● Provide visitors with park information and regulations within the park’s contact stations, stores, nature center, campground and day-use areas
CONTACT STATIONS/ CONCESSIONS ATTENDANT – (6 vacancies - part-time & full-time positions available)
The Contact Stations/ Concessions Attendant position provides customer service for park visitors in three concessions buildings and three contact stations. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Use of a computer and a point of sale system to register campers, complete reports and sell park merchandise and passes for day use areas
● Provide visitors with park information and regulations within the park’s contact stations, stores, campground and day-use areas
● Answer telephones and a communications radio
● Maintain and clean the concessions and contact station buildings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
