Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Conservation Jobs Corps (CJC) is a five-week summer employment program for disadvantaged youth ages 14 - 17 operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service. CJC uses outdoor experiential activities and the power of nature to enrich the lives of youth and prepare them for future success in the workforce. The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions for CJC Camp Coach for the CJC Program. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the specific location(s) of interest for this recruitment.
The CJC Camp Coach is responsible for sustaining all CJC Camp Specialists at a particular park or park area. CJC Camp Specialists are directly responsible for supervising several crews of approximately 6 youth per crew that are participating in a 3-day/2-night camping experience. OVERNIGHT TENT CAMPING is required while attending camp. Meals must also be prepared while at camp.
The CJC Camp Coach shall provide direction and guidance to CJC Corps Members and ensure that CJC Camp Specialists utilize strategies provided in training to introduce youth to an outdoor living experience which will acquaint them with the Maryland Park Service and help foster them in the development of an outdoor ethic. Additional direction and guidance include, but not limited to the following:
● Proper professional work ethic and behavior
● Dispel myths about the outdoors
● First-aid and workplace safety
● Environmental issues and conservation, emphasis on camping and outdoor recreation
● Team Building and Work Ethic
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Prior work experience with CJC and experience with youth.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education or experience in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business, administration, forestry, social sciences, or a natural resources related field
Previous work experience with at-risk youth
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland, a good driving record, and must be 21 years of age (requirement for driving rental vans used during the program).
Possession of current certification in CPR for adult/child and First Aid is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must complete approximately 6 hours of mandatory online training by Friday, June 12, 2020.
Applicants must attend a mandatory CJC Coach Orientation on Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Applicants must attend a mandatory CJC Camp Training on Monday, June 22, 2020 to Wednesday, June 24, 2020 (OVERNIGHT).
Applicants must attend a mandatory training the week of Monday, June 29, 2020 to Friday, July 3, 2020 to be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (additional hours may be required, and training dates are subject to change).
Applicants must have a background investigation completed.
SELECTION PROCESS
BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
